OTA and leading security organizations have been warning for years the danger of using similar combinations of the same password across multiple accounts. It is no surprise that StubHub customers are the most recent victims of a major account takeover scam perpetrated by an international cybercrime ring. The increase of data breaches (along with spearphishing) is driving an increase in account takeover incidents.

Senate Cybersecurity Information Sharing Bill

Senators from the Senate Intelligence Committee yesterday introduced a draft of a bill meant to remove barriers for private companies to share data with Federal agencies. Senate Intelligence Chairman Dianne Feinstein and ranking member Saxby Chambliss have been working together for over a year to come up with a bill that they believe is both comprehensive enough to remove legal barriers to data sharing, while protecting against legitimate privacy concerns (by requiring the removal of PII and several other measures).

Senate Hearing

The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has scheduled a hearing, “Online Advertising and Hidden Hazards to Consumer Security and Data Privacy,” on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., in Room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The Subcommittee will be examining consumer security and data privacy in the online advertising industry, an investigation led by Senator McCain. Specifically, the Subcommittee is investigating data collection processes and security vulnerabilities that have inflicted significant costs on Internet users and American businesses.
