Championing Data Privacy & Protection to Enhance Consumer Trust
Data Privacy & Protection Day (DpD) recognizes the first data privacy directive signed on January 28, 1981. Today DpD is 'celebrated' as Data Protection Day internationally (Data Privacy Day in the US), recognizing the importance of data protection and adoption of responsible privacy practices. History of Data Protection Day
Supporting DpD, OTA has published an annual Cyber Incident & Breach Readiness Guide, promoting security standards, responsible privacy practices and related tools to aid organizations in enhancing the protection of their data and being prepared for a data loss incident. For 2018, this information will be delivered in two parts - the initial portion via the Cyber Incident & Breach Trends Report, which summarizes findings and explores key trends seen for cyber incidents in 2017, and the remainder via a Guide similar to those of previous years.
As in last year's Guide, the analysis and trends commentary is not limited to data breaches alone, but is extended to include ransomware, business email compromise (BEC), distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) and vulnerabilities created by IoT devices. As defined by OTA researchers, incidents include unauthorized: 1) access to a system or device and its data, 2) extraction, deletion or damage to any form of data, 3) disruption of availability and/or integrity of any business operation, and/or 4) activities causing financial or reputational harm.
