National Series of Town Halls and Workshops to Promote Data Privacy & Protection Day
Federal Trade Commissioners to keynote with participation from the FBI, Secret Service and thought leaders in consumer protection, privacy and cybersecurity

SEATTLE – January 6, 2015 – The Online Trust Alliance (OTA), the non-profit with the mission to enhance online trust and promote innovation, announced the sixth annual OTA Data Privacy & Protection Town Hall and Breach Response Workshops to be held San Francisco, New York and Washington DC from January 28 through February 5, 2015.
Designed for business, marketing, privacy and security decision makers, the events deliver actionable advice and prescriptive guidance. Attendees will learn responsible privacy enhancing and data security practices to help prevent, detect, contain and remediate identity theft and breach threats.
OTA, one of the first organizations to champion Data Privacy and Protection Day in North America, has expanded the event series through a broad coalition of underwriters and supporters including Act-On Software, Brunswick Group, Bryan Cave LLP, Epsilon, Holland & Knight LLP, Identity Guard, Sailthru, SiteLock, Symantec and TRUSTe.
“Consumer trust has been tarnished by the recent Sony, Staples and Home Depot breaches, among others. These intrusions are a continual reminder of the criticality of data privacy and protection,” said Craig Spiezle, OTA Executive Director. “Considering over 90 percent of breaches in 2014 were avoidable, every employee – from the boardroom to the backroom – has a responsibility to embrace privacy and security practices on behalf of consumers. The upcoming Data Privacy and Protection Day events are a timely reminder for companies to reexamine their data collection and security practices in order to help prevent, detect, contain and respond to an incident. OTA is committed to helping companies protect their brand reputation.”
The events represent a broad collaboration of public/private partnerships, and include speakers and thought leaders from: American Greetings, the Center for Democracy & Technology, Microsoft, PayPal, Publishers Clearing House, Symantec and Twitter, as well as the FBI, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Secret Service and state Attorney General offices.
A consortium of non-profits are supporting the program: Anti-Phishing Working Group, the Center for Democracy & Technology, Digital Content Next, Email Sender & Provider Coalition, Future of Privacy Forum, Identity Theft Council, Privacy Identity Innovation (pii), Smart Card Alliance, StopBadware and local chapters of InfraGard and the Better Business Bureau.
